Notes:
Originally built to defend New York Harbor in the War of 1812, the red sandstone, circular fort was never actually used for military purposes. Instead, it became Castle Garden entertainment center in 1824 hosting the 1850 U.S. debut of Swedish chanteuse Jenny Lind. Since that time, Castle Clinton has functioned as an opera house, an aquarium, and a processing center for more than 8 million immigrants. It was designated a national monument in 1946.
Again this summer, the Downtown Alliance and River to River return NYC’s oldest performance venue to its former glory with FREE waterfront music. During performances, limited seating is available and tickets are required, distributed two per person on a first-come, first-served basis, at 5:00 PM the day of show. No beach chairs, etc. or outside food is allowed at Castle Clinton performances.
